Wang Anshi: The Weaver-Urger ~ 《促织》 王安石 with English Translations

《促织》是北宋著名的思想家、政治家、文学家、改革家王安石的一首七言绝句。此诗不明作年。有说作于在京任群牧司判官或提点开封府界诸县镇公事期间，约与《出郊》同时。这是一首咏物诗。借咏促织，寄寓对社会不公的批判。

金屏翠幔与秋宜，得此年年醉不知。
只向贫家促机杼，几家能有一絇丝？

In autumn golden screens and emerald curtains are pleasing to the eye;
People may indulge in them every year without giving any thought.
They know only of urging the poor to work faster at the loom,
Yet how many weavers can afford a single skein of silk thread?
